After winning the Division 1 state championship and losing a dominant senior class, the Zeeland boys swim team faced an uphill climb this season.
But instead of falling into a rebuilding year, a new group of stars emerged — led by Jason VanderPlaats.
Here are the top performances in the Greater Holland Bowling Association and Holland Women's Bowling Association for the week ending March 6.
Here are how the local teams match up.
Zeeland’s Tyler Keelean won a Division 1 regional diving championship Tueday with a score of 458.4 — 46.2 points better than runner up Mike Vaandering from Grand Haven at East Kentwood.
Austin Semple was a determined basketball player Monday night in Zeeland West’s 68-44 Class B district home victory over Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
“We did not want to lose,” said Semple, who scored a game-high 24 points. “We stepped it up defensively and finished.”
Austin Sale scored for the Zeeland East boys basketball team with 5 minutes, 58 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to cut Hudsonville’s lead to 30-29.
That, however, would be the last basket of the game and the season for the Chix as the Eagles scored the final 13 points for a 43-29 win in a Class A district game at Zeeland East High School.

In what other place can a student dress up in a green and gold pope costume and scream at the top of his lungs at his principal while she performs a duck call?
Or can two groups featuring hundreds of students from rival schools parade up to each other, square off nose-to-nose and battle in a breakdance competition?
Or can one see a 6-foot tall bunny rabbit, Spiderman and a gorilla all in the same room?
Holland, Holland Christian and Fennville are teams to beat in their respective district tournament.
Play tips off tonight. Here is a look at the five ones involving local teams.
West Ottawa and Holland Christian girls basketball teams playing for regional championship make this well, as well as Hope women's basketball in the Sweet 16, the high school state swim finals, the Big Ten men's basketball tournament and Michigan-MSU CCHA playoff hockey.
Tyler Keelean looked like the diver to beat at the upcoming Division 1 regional and state meet. But following his record-setting performance at the O-K Green Conference meet, the Zeeland junior injured his back and hasn’t been able to practice all of his dives.
“It is muscle overstress, and it hasn’t let me dive during my full potential this week,” he said. “ I am just trying to get that healed.”
With two Zeeland East players going for the ball and another closing in, Holland center Josh Weatherspoon snatched the entry pass under the basket, reversed to the other side of the hoop and laid it in.
The next possession, he ripped an offensive rebound away from two Chix players and went up for the putback to score as time wound down in the first half of the regular season finale.
Weatherspoon dominated down low for the Dutch as he scored all 22 of his game-high points before the break and added 17 rebounds to lead his team to a 52-42 victory at Zeeland East Thursday.
The Fennville boys basketball team routed Lawrence for first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Thursday night, as it had five players score in double digits en route to a 72-54 victory.
“It’s great for Fennville basketball, we’re glad to get the trophy and bring it back to our place,” Blackhawks coach Ryan Klingler said. “But I think we’ve still got some things that we want to accomplish.”
Twelve wrestlers will compete in the three-day event that begins this afternoon at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Here is a look at each of them:
Breanna and Cally Verkaik wish their older sister, Carissa, the best Friday when she plays her first game in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament with Calvin College. They just won’t be able to cheer her on like they usually do. They have an important game themselves.
Breanna and Cally will start for the Maroons Friday in the Class B district championship game. Holland Christian (16-6) faces Middleville-Thornapple Kellogg (6-16) at 7 p.m.
After his team played flat in the third quarter against Zeeland East in a Class A district semifinal Wednesday, West Ottawa girls basketball coach Jonathan Goei shouted to his players, demanding they fight for the game.
But Goei doesn’t anticipate needing to verbally inspire his team as it heads into Friday’s 7 p.m. district title against Grandville after it beat the Chix 30-19.
Here are the scores from Wednesday's local girls high school basketball district semifinal games.
The Panthers defeat host Spring Lake Tuesday in nonleague play.
Other Tuesday winners were Zeeland West and Saugatuck. Hamilton, Fennville and Black River all lost.
Brian Dexter joined an exclusive Greater Holland Bowling Association club when he threw a perfect game last week.
It is difficult to keep Saugatuck basketball player Ana Capotosto from smiling these days. Not even a broken nose suffered from an opposing player’s elbow last week during a game against Decatur is tempering her enthusiasm.
Also, take a look at who's the team to beat in each local district.
