Breaking 100

This week is I want to talk about scoring. You may not realize it, but only about 10% of the people who ever try golf will ever break 100 for 18 holes. If you have golfed a lot or a little, you remember the day you first boke through that barrier and started working toward the next goal (breaking 90). It's not always a case of your ability....quite often it is a problem of focusing on the wrong things.

I got a tip once from an assistant pro in Augusta GA on a great way to attack your target score. Stop paying attention to your 9 or 18 hole total as the round is progressing, and break your target score down into 6 three hole "games". For example if your goal is to break 80, you need to average about 13 strokes for every three holes. By breaking the target down this way, you can focus your attention on a smaller number of holes which helps increase your focus on each shot.

I remember using this theory to break 80 for the first time and eventually to attack the goal of an under par round. It works (if you're serious about it) and can help you take your scoring to a different level....

Here are the numbers in case you are not great at math

To break 100 - Average 16.5 per three holes (round it down to 16)
To break 90 - Average 15 per three holes
To break 80 - Average 13 per three holes
To break 70 - Average 11 per three holes

Good luck...we'll see you on the course.

Ok,

maybe this is wussing out, but I've always gone for an average of 5 per hole. I do this on par 3's 4's & 5's. It's also an easy way to keep score in my head as I'm playing. I just count + or - on every hole and at the end if I'm at say minus 4 I know I shot 86 without adding up every hole.
