Best Shot Ever

MichaelAssink's picture

I have probably played 3,500 rounds of golf in my life (or more) and have yet to get a hole in one...Having said that, I have had a lot of shots that I can remember like they happened yesterday.  In no particular order....here are the three shots that I think are the best I ever had.

1.)  Holland Country Club - #11, holed a 185 yard 8 iron for an eagle (after a TERRIBLE drive)

2.)  Stone Bridge CC - Ann Arbor area - #17, 208 yard 4 iron over a dozen bunkers to a tight left "sucker" pin....made the putt for eagle (yes it was a par 5)

3.)  Holland Country Club - #7 - Driver to 75 yards....the shot was not the greatest ever, it was the situation......I 'll tell you the story.

I was in the annual member guest tournament in the late 90's at the Holland Country Club with my brother Greg and we shot well enough on day 1 to get into the alternate shot shootout on Friday night (the first ever).  We were teamed with Gary and Jason Tenharmsel...a couple of great guys who are a riot to golf with.  The format called for 1 team of 4 to be elimiated after each hole and we somehow survived a penalty stroke on the first hole (#10 at the Club) and I had to tee off on the next hole which was going to be #7 (a right to left dog leg with trees right and the river left).  I wanted to hit a safe 5 iron and leave 175 yards or so for the next player to try and get it on the green.  Having not played any tournament golf before, I WAS NERVOUS...to say the least.

While I was off by myself warming up, Gary came over to me with my driver in his hand, grabbed my 5 iron and yelled..."Hit your $%#*$% driver".  I guess I had no choice, I got up, knees knocking and hit a beautiful draw arond the corner (and the large willow tree) up the small hill and in the fairway.  We went on to win...really cool, and thanks Gary.

Tell me about your best shot ever...everyone who posts a comment will get a $3 off coupon to The Pheasant and the best story will get a free 9 hole round....I'll award the prize in 2 weeks.

See you on the course

Michael

OK, anyone who knows me knows that I am not a golfer. However a few years ago I was on a team, I don't know why they invited me. These guys are good. We were playing best shot for the hole. On 13 at Swan Lake Resort in Ply. Indiana we were all on the green, but pretty far from the hole, of course me being the farthest. No problem I thought these guys are good one of them will make it. NO, they all missed. I was being cute and told them to watch how it was done (right). Well I am very happy to say that my 36ft put rolled this way and then that way looked like it would miss by several inches when it came back and gently dropped into the cup. I have to confess as I look back that it was very "Tigeresque"
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I once drove the green on a 340 yard par 4. OK, reality check: It was at Iron Wood in Grandville, a course notorious for generously over marking their yardage. (A greenskeeper at the course once told me off the record that they measure from the back of the tee area to the back of the green...and then add a little.)

It still counts though. Boo Yaa!!!
